The Department of Medicine was established in May 1965 with three staff. Dr Myo Thwe, as Assistant Lecturer stationed at the Medicine Department of the Defence Services General Hospital. Major Tin Ohn was appointed as head of the department (part time) and Capt. Mya Oo as clinical tutor (part time.) The first introductory course for 3rd MBBS class was given on 18th May 1965. In December 1966, Maj. Tin Ohn was promoted as the Professor and Head (part time) and Dr. Aung Than Batu joined the department as a Lecturer in late 1966. In November 1970, Dr. Myo Thwe was promoted as a lecturer, when Dr. Aung Than Batu was promoted to the post of Clinical Professor and Head of the Medical unit at North Okkalapa General Hospital. Since that time three teaching units became established, each unit headed by Prof, Tin Ohn, Prof. Aung Than Batu and Dr. Myo Thwe respectively with one assistant lecturer, three clinical tutors and part time teaching staffs from the respective hospitals. When Prof. Aung Than Batu was appointed as Director General of the Department of Medical Research in September 1977, Dr. Myo Thwe was promoted as the clinical Professor, and then to the professor and Head in September 1978, when Prof. Tin Ohn left for Malaysia on a secondment basis. Lt. Col. Mya Oo, then lecturer, was promoted to the post of Clinical Professor and then to the post of Professor and Head in November 1987.With gradual expansion of the department, a new professorial unit was established in Sanpya Hospital, Thingangyun in July 1997 in addition to the teaching unit in North Okkalapa General Hospital and Defence Services General Hospital. By 1998 the department offers general medical and several subspecialty services, nephrology, cardiology, hematology, gastroenterology, hepatology, neurology, respiratory, diabetology, dermatology, oncology, physical medicine & rehabilitation and psychiatry. The research unit of malaria has been established since 1991, in collaboration with the Department of Medical Research. In addition to the undergraduate courses, the department has been conducting postgraduate courses, M.Med.Sc (Int.Med) since 1975, Dr Med Sc (Gen.Med) since 1997 and Diploma in General Practice since 1998. Diploma in General Practice was replaced by Family Medicine since 2003.Department of Endocrinology was established in 2012 and Dr Med Sc (Endocrinology) course conducted in 2014. Prof.Than Than Aye was acting as Emeritus professor and with Prof U Ko Ko endocrine unit was carrying out its academic acitivities.
