About Our Department

The history of the department dates back to 1963, when University of Medicine (2) was inaugurated. Professor Dr U Hla Thein headed the newly formed Department of Pathology. To date eight professors have headed the department. Professor Dr. Myint Myint Nyein is the present head of the department since December 2011.General Pathology and Systemic Pathology are taught to undergraduate 3rd M.B., B.S and Final part 1 M.B., B.S students since 1965. A post - graduate course of Master of Medical Science (Pathology) has been introduced in 1995 and to date 50 candidates have graduated and 16 candidates are taking the course. A doctorate course was introduced in 1999. The first candidate had graduated in 2002. This was followed by 17 respective candidates eligible for doctoral degree. At the moment four candidates are doing research work leading to a doctoral degree.  Diploma course was introduced and conducted starting from July 2014. 3 Candidates are attending the course nowadays.The department is also involved in teaching of Pathology in basic science course for clinical and paraclinical post graduates.The department contributes Clinical Pathology services at the teaching hospitals since 1998, the Pathology Department at the University and its main teaching hospital i.e. NOGH has been integrated and the head of the department holds a dual charge for both departments.The Defense Service General Hospital had been the main teaching hospital when the University was located in Mingaladon till 1970, when North Okkalapa General Hospital was opened . At present, the list of a affiliated hospital has extended including Thingangyun  Sanpya General Hospital. The University campus is located in North Okkalapa since 1996. The department is engaged in several research works in the various Clinical Pathology disciplines. In addition to research projects undertaken by master & doctorate students, the department also has several departmental research works as well as research in collaboration with other departments in the University and other Institutes both national and international.
