The Department of Pediatrics was first established in 1968 at the University of Medicine (2). The teaching facility was at the Pediatric Unit of the Defense Services General Hospital affiliated to the Institute.To accommodate the increasing load of medical students, a teaching unit for Child Health at North Okkalapa General Hospital (NOGH) was incorporated into the University of Medicine (2) in 1977. A second teaching Unit in NOGH was later established in 1982. Two more teaching Units for Child Health were opened in 1994 at two affiliated hospitals Insein and Thingangyun, and later at South Okkalapa General Hospital in 1998. After opening of Yankin Children Hopsital in 2011, it has become the main teaching hospital of the Department.Initially, the teaching in Child Health at the University of Medicine (2) was only for undergraduate students. Later, in 1990 the M.Med.Sc students from the University of Medicine (I), Yangon came for postgraduate training in the teaching units of University of Medicine (2). M.Med.Sc (Paediatrics) course in the U.M (2) was inaugurated in December 1993 with 6 candidates. In September 1997, the Doctorate course on Medical Science (Paediatrics) was commenced. Diploma in Child Health course and Diploma in General Practice courses were introduced to University of Medicine (2) in January 1998. The Diploma in Child Health course is suspended after 1999. The Diploma in Family Medicine course was introduced in 2003-2004.The Diploma in Medical Science (Pediatrics) course was introduced in 2014.
